The original designs for the Band des Bundes envisaged a place for citizens between the Federal Chancellery and Paul-Löbe-House as a keystone to the composition and as a symbol for the successful reunification of the country. To this day there is still a gap - a poignant metaphor for the state of today's politics perhaps. The Bürgerforum MMXX is conceived as a collection of temporary pavilions, which are to fill that void. They will house the festivities for the 30th anniversary of the German reunification.
An initiative by Die Offene Gesellschaft.
"2020 will mark the 30th anniversary of German unification, but at the moment we are experiencing more of a divided country. For years, the debate has revolved around old and new divisions - between town and country, between old and young, between rich and poor, between east and west, between up and down. Whether these dividing lines are real or just a figment of our imagination is a matter of long debate. One thing is clear: tendencies of division have a deep impact on society. Even a cursory glance at the commentary columns on the net reveals a deep mistrust of politics, science, business and fellow human beings. A new disdain for democracy has long since been felt not only on the extreme edges of society.
It is time to celebrate democracy by living it anew. For this we want to create a place in the heart of the republic: the Citizens*forum."
