An office for a visual effects studio. The existing floor slab was partially removed to bring light into the otherwise damp and dark basement. A new steel structure extends the space and houses the meeting rooms and connects the basement and ground floor of the new office.
In addition to kitchen, storage and toilets, the client wanted flexible open-plan offices, smaller offices for rent and so-called 'grading suites'. To save on rental costs, the client decided to buy the basement and asked us to make this dark, damp space usable as a workplace. By opening the two vaults to the backyard and breaking through the ceiling on the long side of the room, the basement was flooded with natural light. The new structure, made of exposed mild green painted structural steel, adds three offices to the overall space, as well as a staircase connecting all three floors of the space. While the existing building was to remain recognisable as an industrial building, the new structure was designed to be light and elegant.
